Description:

Booth Evangeline

Small archive comprised of three typed letters, two signed by Evangeline Booth as “Evangeline Booth, Commander”, spanning between May 9 and September 11, 1922. Letters were in response to inquiries from Sharpless Dodson Green, a public school administrator from Trenton, New Jersey.

On May 9th and May 10th, 1922, then Salvation Army Commander Evangeline Booth gave Green’s graduating seniors some life lesson advice on watermarked “Salvation Army National Headquarters, 120 West 14th Street, New York” letterhead complete with “Blood and Fire” eagle and sun logo at top. “The names of great men are invariably associated in our minds with the work they did. They are lifted up above their fellows in the estimation of all because of what they accomplished for the betterment of the world”, Booth wrote. She continued: “Service is therefore the true standard of greatness. You may not all be equally free to choose the work you would like to do, but you are equally free to choose the spirit that shall mark your work, and the diligence and sense of responsibility to God with which you shall perform it. Something of your own character will enter into everything you do, and independent of circumstances will carry your on to the place that God wants you to fill”. Both in near fine condition, with expected paper folds. Isolated discoloration to May 9th letter and paper clip impression to May 10th letter, the pages measuring 8.5” x 11”.

Accompanied by a September 11, 1922 TLS signed by Colonel W.F. Jenkins, National Secretary of the Salvation Army, granting Green permission to reproduce Booth’s message. Page is toned overall and with possible insect damage to lower right corner.

Evangeline Booth (1865-1950) was a British social activist appointed the first female General of the Salvation Army in 1934. “The Christian Mission”, as the Salvation Army was then called, was founded by Evangeline’s father William Booth (1829-1912) in 1865. This non-profit Protestant organization, modeled after the military, supported charitable efforts around the world. Evangeline devoted her life to its service, as did many of her family members. She enlisted as a sergeant at age 15, and eventually became Field Commander of Great Britain in 1888. Booth served as Commander of the United States between 1904 and 1934. Her advice to Green’s high school class reveals much about her work ethic and religious convictions.
