Sabine Baring-Gould AQS, "Onward, Christian Soldiers"
AQS

A 1p autograph quote signed by British Anglican priest and hymn-writer Sabine Baring-Gould (1834-1924) as "S. Baring-Gould" at bottom. N.d., n.p. Baring-Gould has inscribed the title and five complete stanzas of the hymn "Onward, Christian Soldiers" on a lightly pencil-lined sheet of paper. Matted and framed behind glass; not examined out of the frame. Gentle toning and some paper wavering, with isolated areas of loss found at three of the four corners of the sheet, probably from past mounting. A few frame dents and dings, else near fine. The sight size of the manuscript is 6.875" x 11.125" while the frame measures 13.375" x 17.75" x 1."

A nearly identical example of this AQS - though not as attractively framed - brought over $10,000 in a 2013 Bonhams auction.

Baring-Gould wrote the words to "Onward, Christian Soldiers" in 1865; the music was later composed by Arthur Sullivan. The popular hymn was soon adopted by The Salvation Army.

The signed manuscript reads in full, with unchanged spelling and punctuation:

"Onward Christian Soldiers

Onward, Christian soldiers
Marching as to war,
With the Cross of Jesus
Going on before.
Christ the Royal Master
Leads against the foe;
Forward into battle
See the banners go.

At the sign of triumph
Satan's legions flee;
On then, Christian soldiers,
On to victory.
Hell's foundations quiver
At the shout of praise;
Brothers, lift your voices,
Loud your anthems raise

Like a mighty army
Moves the Church of God;
Brothers, we are treading
Where the Saints have trod.
We are not divided,
All one body we,
One in hope, in doctrine
One in charity.

Crowns + thorns may perish
Kingdoms wax and wane,
But the Church of Jesus
Constant will remain.
Gates of hell can never
'Gainst that Church prevail;
We have Christ's own promise
And that can not fail.

Onward then ye people
Join our happy throng,
Blend with ours your voices
In the triumph song: -
Glory, land + honour
Unto Christ the King,
This through endless ages
men + Angels sing.

S. Baring-Gould."
