Russo-Ukrainian War
n.p., ca. 2014-2022
Russo-Ukrainian War-Dated Helmet Cover With Ear Protection
Other

The remnants of a probable Russian helmet cover with built-in ear protection, dating from the most recent iteration of the Russo-Ukrainian War, ca. 2022. N.p. The crown of the helmet cover features protective ribbing in a dense but flexible material, covered by camouflaged-covered canvas. A canvas forehead flap is secured by buttons, with nearby Velcro patches. The built-in ear protection consists of a complete canvas-covered set of headphones, each earpiece having a foam insert, metal and plastic fastenings, and a rubberized ear guard. The helmet cover also includes a leather chin strap with buckles, as well as a short length of 5-prong electric cord; the cord, along with blue and white plastic-encased wiring in one of the earpieces, suggests the remains of a possible communications headset. The left ear muff is largely intact but the right one is loose, permitting an unobstructed view of two series of Russian-language numbers and abbreviations including "???-T-13-01" and "?35/90." The helmet cover exhibits considerable wear including loss, discoloration, deterioration, brittleness, holes, and burn marks. One of the helmet cover ribs is detached but included. The helmet cover measures approximately 10" wide by 13" high by 6" deep and weighs 2.10lbs including its original storage box. The cardboard box features shipping instructions in Ukrainian, as well as the pro-Ukrainian slogan (translated) "Ukraine is love."

The Russo-Ukrainian War officially began in 2014 with Russia's annexation of Crimea. Then followed a period of smaller engagements between the two adversaries, including cyberwarfare attacks. Russia launched a full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, just after the closure of the 2022 Winter Olympic Games. The Russo-Ukrainian War is the largest conflict in Europe since World War II.
