In part:
"…Will you come to Washington when it does occur, and will you come to my house? Answer the two last questions in the affirmative. I hope to see you very much, & hope you can come down. Let me know. I am busy as usual here marking bad laws to be overruled by [illegible] subsequent generations of Judges, as we are occasionally doing with our predecessors."

Rufus W. Peckham (1838-1909) served as an Associate Justice of the U.S. Supreme Court from 1895 to 1909. He was nominated by President Grover Cleveland following the death of Howell Edmunds Jackson and was sworn into office on January 6, 1896. Peckham's time on the Court was during the height of laissez-faire constitutionalism, and he and his fellow justices were known for striking down numerous efforts to regulate labor standards and regulations of business and property.

Alton Brooks Parker (1852-1926) was a New York judge who was appointed to the New York Supreme Court and was elected to the New York Court of Appeals; he served as Chief Judge of the latter from 1898 to 1904. Parker may be best known as the Democrat candidate who lost the presidential election of 1904 to Theodore Roosevelt. He had defeated William Randolph Hearst for the Democratic Party nomination but was plagued by a disorganized and ineffective campaign. After his loss, Parker returned to practicing law but helped manage John A. Dix's successful 1910 campaign for Governor of New York.
