Description:

Rudyard Kipling "Jungle Book" Author 1897 ALS

Rudyard Kipling (1865-1936). Autograph Letter Signed, "Rudyard Kipling", 2pp on "Rock House / Maidencombe" bifolium stationery measuring 4.125" x 6", St. Marychurch, March 25, 1897. To Charles O. Brewster, Esq. at the University Club in New York City. Includes original mailing envelope addressed in Kipling's hand. Foxing throughout, else in very good plus condition and boldly signed.

Kipling's letter regards his book of poetry, "The Seven Seas", and reads, in full, below:

"I have to acknowledge with many thanks your letter of the 5th together with the old Farmer's Almanac which I have generally known as the 'Robert B Thomas' to distinguish it from all sorts of 'Farmer's Almanacs', Farm Calendars and such like.

I should feel much in your debt if you would further point out to me any error in fact or inference which occurs in the story that I may correct it for 'book form.' The title 'Seven Seas' comes from the verse in the Rubaiyat of Omar Khay'yam

'When you and I behind the veil are passed
Oh but the long, long time the world will last
Which of our coming and departure heeds
as the Seven Seas would heed a pebble cast'."

An English novelist, short-story writer, poet, and journalist, Kipling was born in British India, which inspired much of his work. In the late 19th and early 20th centuries, he was among the United Kingdom's most popular writers. In 1907, Kipling was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature. He was also sounded out for the British Poet Laureateship and several times for a knighthood, but declined both. Following his death, Kipling's ashes were interred at Poets' Corner, part of the South Transept of Westminster Abbey.
