A lengthy autograph letter from famed German pathologist Rudolf Ludwig Virchow, addressed to French colleague Charles Jacques Bouchard. 3p of a bifolium, 4.5" x 7", Berlin, Germany, November 5, 1899. Untranslated in French and signed at conclusion as "Rudolf Virchow". The letter is accompanied by its original holograph envelope, postmarked from Paris on November 7, 1899. Exhibits light age toning and scattered handling/pencil note marks throughout, with uneven soiling to envelope. Very good to near fine overall. Worthy of further research!

Rudolf Virchow (1821-1902) was a German physician and scientific writer often referred to as "the father of modern pathology". He first gained notoriety during the 1847-1848 typhus epidemic in Upper Silesia, which laid the foundation for public health in Germany and paved a course for both his political and social careers. Virchow also became the first to describe and name such diseases as leukemia, chordoma, ochronosis, embolism, and thrombosis.

Charles Jacques Bouchard (1837-1915) was a French pathologist who became a member of the Academie de Médecine in 1886. Earlier, while studying under Jean-Martin Charcot (1825-1893), he described a disorder that would later be known as the "Charcot-Bouchard aneurism", characterized as a small aneurysm on cerebral perforated vessels.
