The 1967 Inaugural Ceremonies

                  Of

        Ronald Reagan

Governor of the State of California

    January fourth and fifth

     City of Sacramento"

Reagan's career was launched when he wrote a speech, "A Time for Choosing". His position ultimately became his platform for his presidential campaign:

In the speech, he revealed his ideological motivation: "The Founding Fathers knew a government can't control the economy without controlling people. And they knew when a government sets out to do that, it must use force and coercion to achieve its purpose. So we have come to a time for choosing." He also said, "You and I are told we must choose between a left or right, but I suggest there is no such thing as a left or right. There is only an up or down. Up to man's age-old dream – the maximum of individual freedom consistent with law and order – or down to the ant heap of totalitarianism."

Reagan held two terms as Governor, which helped to shape the policies he would pursue in his later political career as president. By campaigning on a platform of sending "the welfare bums back to work", he spoke out against the idea of the welfare state. He also strongly advocated for less government regulation of the economy and against what he believed to be undue federal taxation creating his economic platform later coined Reaganomics
