Ronald Reagan on His Genealogy and the Pronunciation of His Name

Single page autograph letter signed, 7.25" x 10.75" on his personal stationary. Dated "May 24, 1955", and signed by Ronald Reagan as "Ronald". Penned on recto and verso.

"I'm sorry to be so late in answering your letter of Feb. 27 but CBS just got around to forwarding it to me. I'm afraid I can't be of much help with regards to the Reagan history. My father was born somewhere in Iowa or in the vicinity of Fulton, Ill. His name was John Edward Reagan and he had one brother William - they are both deceased. The reason my information is so sketchy is because Dad's parents died when he was about 3 yr of age and he was raised by an Aunt - his father's name by the way was John. If I can dig up any  more information I'll certainly let you know. Orphaned as he was - family talk as I remember it centered more on those who raised him and I heard very little about his parents. The "e" as against the "a" pronunciation of our name has been a family joke all my life. We say "a" and even our best friends continue to say "e". I'm glad to learn other Reagans have the same problem. My thanks for your kind letter and I'll look forward to hearing from you. Our home address is 1258 No. Amalfi Dr., Pacific Palisades, Calif. Best regards … "

Reagan's grandfather, John Michael Reagan (1854-1889_ was born in England and died in Fulton, Illinois in 1889, when his son, John Edward (Jack) Reagan, father of the president, was only six years old. Reagan's grandmother, Jennie Cusick Reagan had passed away in 1886, when her son was three, a fact either Reagan or his father had conflated with the details of the elder Reagan's death. Our letter also mentions Jack Reagan's older brother William (1881-1925), but does not make mention of their two sisters, who would have been the president's aunts. "Reagan had described his father as a proud, confident and ambitious man whose dreams had been crushed by the Depression and who consequently understood his son's burning drive to  make something of himself" (Jack Reagan; A father worthy of honor", WorldNetDaily, Brown), Reagan attributed much of in his own character to lessons he learned from his father, including his work ethic, storytelling ability, and his opposition to racism. Our letter was written while Reagan was the host of CBS' popular General Electric Theater, for which he became both wealthy and famous. A warm letter neatly written. Folded with two file holes at the top. In very good condition and quite unusual with this content.
