Description:

Ronald Reagan as Prez ALS Draft to Tommy Lasorda: "Rest easy- I'm a Dodger fan."

An autographed letter initialed as "RR", drafted by President Ronald Reagan on yellow lined paper to LA Dodgers manager Tommy Lasorda. 1p, measuring 8.5" x 11", ca. May 1981, [Washington, D.C.]. Within, the President clarifies a statement published in the press suggesting he prefers the Chicago Cubs over the Dodgers. Features moderate tearing to right side edge, with isolated toning to top left and expected creasing throughout. Else, very good. Impeccable provenance as this item comes from the files of Helene von Damm (b. 1938), Reagan's longtime personal secretary and later Ambassador to Austria, and gifted to our consignor, her White House assistant.

In full:
“Thanks very much for your letter and the picture. I'm delighted to have it. Rest easy- I’m a Dodger fan. The Press as so often happens didn’t tell the complete story. I told them I was a Dodger fan but that I couldn’t help but have an interest (for old time’s sake) in the fortunes of the Cubs. Nancy & I both hope we can accept your invitation to see a game but we’re not too optimistic about when that can be managed. We’ll just keep hoping. All the best to you & the Dodgers & again thanks./ Sincerely RR”

Tommy Lasorda (1927-2021) was a professional baseball pitcher and manager. After serving as coach of the Los Angeles Dodgers from 1973 to 1976, he managed the team from 1976 to 1996, winning two World Series championships- the first in 1981 over the New York Yankees, and the second in 1988 over the Oakland Athletics. In the 1930s, working for a radio station in Des Moines, Iowa, Reagan would recreate Chicago Cubs games from slips of paper typed by a telegraph operator who was receiving the plays in Morse code. Reagan took his first acting screen test in 1937 while in California to cover the Cubs’ spring training.
