Description:

Ronald Reagan ALS to College Roommate, Excellent Content & Appearance

A handwritten letter from Reagan to his College roommate, James Harrison, about a reunion at Eureka College. 1p, measuring 7.25" x 10.5", Pacific Palisades, California, dated June 14, [1955]. Written on Reagan's personal letterhead and signed "Dutch." Reagan regrets to inform his friend that he will be unable to attend the upcoming commencement but writes that he hopes to visit the area soon. The letter is accompanied by various Eureka ephemera, including two newspaper clippings, a 1930 Eureka College bulletin, and a carbon copy of a 1966 letter from Harrison to Reagan in which he congratulates him on a recent primary election. The letter has flattened mail folds and faint edge wear. Boldly signed. Various degrees of soiling, toning, and wear to the ephemera. Overall very fine.

In full:
"Just a hasty line between chores to prove I'm the world's worst letter writer. I'm sorry to say I can't (by now I should say 'couldn’t') get to Eureka for commencement. There is a chance I can get back to Eureka next fall. I hope so, because like you my curiosity about the next Prexy is pretty overpowering. Also like you I feel the importance of keeping schools like Eureka alive. It was great seeing you last summer, my only regret is we had so little time. Give your family my regards and I hope we can see each other before another twenty years go by. Yours In The Bond, Dutch."

Harrison's 1966 letter, in part:
"Congratulations -- I felt in my bones that you would do it!... Seriously, I think that a digest of a fair sampling of the reaction to you and your message would be that 'here is a bright hope of returning to the dream that is America.' That maybe here is the opportunity to get the American motorcade back on the right freeway. The myth that dictated that no actor or communications or entertainment personality should express himself on affairs politic is being shattered…"
