Description:

Reagan Ronald

Single teacup in "daffodil yellow" with the pattern  '1776 Independence Ironstone' manufactured by Interpace, Japan.  3.5" in diameter across the top opening. 3.5" tall, with a delicate handle. Fine condition.

A lovely teacup from the personal collection of President Ronald and Nancy Reagan, owned and used by them at their Bel Air California home. Originally sold at Christie's in New York. This brightly colored tea cup is from the respected firm of Interpace. A firm with a long history, being founded in 1875 as "Francisan" which later then grew and acquired other potteries. The company made floor tiles, dinnerware, and art pottery with a variety of trademarks. In 1936, the name used in advertisements and marks was changed from Franciscan Pottery to Franciscan Ware. The company became Interpace Corporation and in 1979 was purchased by Josiah Wedgwood & Sons. The plant was closed in 1984 but a few of the patterns are still being made. The pattern both loved and used by the Reagans is called '1776 Independence'  with the pieces of their collection in the color of "daffodil yellow".  A nice association for this piece owned by two great Americans with the markings illustrating Independence Hall, and boldly emblazoned  "1776" on the bottom of the cup.

Mrs. Nancy Reagan was well known for her interest in elegant designer classics and the Reagan's choice of dinnerware was no exception. This was shown during her years as First Lady as her flair for entertaining and hosting transformed the aura of style and sophistication to the White House.  “She felt the White House should exemplify the best,” said Mark Weinberg, who worked on Ronald Reagan’s campaigns, in the White House Press Office. The First Lady handled her life both in and out of the White House with the same conviction, and this stunning piece from their personal dinnerware collection personifies Nancy Reagan's attention to style and her love of timeless sophisticated design.

The Reagan auction saw record prices for a celebrity including about $200,000 for cowboy boots and $100,000 for a sheet of Presidential doodles. This incomplete set was purchased with the hopes that individual items could be offered, so as to share something intimate, private and Presidential with clients who might not wish to own a large group. The Reagans entertained a regalia of people at their home ranging from Heads of State and Politicos to the glitterati friends from the Hollywood days.
