Description:

Taney Roger

Roger B. Taney, Later Supreme Court Justice, DS from University of Maryland

Magnificent medical school diploma signed by future Supreme Court Chief Justice Roger B. Taney (1777-1864) as "R.B. Taney Provost" at center bottom. Signed on April 4, 1831 in Baltimore, Maryland. The Latin language document is printed in florid script on a single sheet of vellum measuring 18.125" x 23.5". Also signed by ten other university officials and faculty members from the University of Maryland. A well-defined central fold, and a few isolated discolored spots verso, else near fine.

While he is more known for his 28-year-long tenure as Supreme Court Justice, from 1836-1864, Roger B. Taney also served as a trustee and Provost of the University of Maryland between 1826-1839. Taney signed this medical school diploma in that official capacity.

There is no forthcoming information about our diploma recipient, "Anselmus A. Gillespie," but we can get a sense of his experience by studying the account of Dr. James Garry, an Irish-born student who graduated from the University of Maryland's medical school a year earlier, in 1830. (Reproduced in Volume I of Dr. Eugene Fauntleroy Cordell's University of Maryland, 1807-1907, Its History, Influence, Equipment and Characteristics (New York: Lewis Publishing Company, 1907).

Dr. Garry had been reviewed "before a dignified and most learned board of Professors…of Anatomy, Physiology, Practice of Medicine, Surgery, Materia Medica, Obstetrics and Chemistry…a month later came the Commencement, with its triumphs…I received my diploma in company with the other fifty graduates on the 5th of April last. They were handed to us by the Provost, R.B. Taney, in Anatomical Theatre of the University, in the presence of the most beautiful and fashionable assembly of ladies and gentlemen I ever saw…" (182-183).

Some of the faculty members that evaluated Gillespie and Garry signed this document at lower right. Other signees include fellow university trustees Nathaniel Williams and William Frick, and Solomon Etting, who served as Governor of the Infirmary.

An interesting, new look at Roger B. Taney, considered apart from his controversial Supreme Court rulings on the Dred Scott case and the Missouri Compromise reversal!
