Oscar Hammerstein I (1846-1919) was a German-born businessman, composer, and theater impresario who built several theaters in New York. His passion for opera led him to open several opera houses, and he helped rekindle opera's popularity in America. In 1906, he built the Manhattan Opera House, which has since been renamed and is known today as the Hammerstein Ballroom of Manhattan Center. His family continued its passion for the arts, with his sons being theater manager William Hammerstein and American producer Arthur Hammerstein, and his grandson was lyricist Oscar Hammerstein II.

Rodgers and Hammerstein was an iconic team of composer Richard Rodgers (1902–1979) and lyricist-dramatist Oscar Hammerstein II (1895–1960). The two men produced some of the most innovative and influential American musicals, including "Cinderella", "Oklahoma!", "The King and I", and "The Sound of Music". Sarah Vaughan (1924 –1990) was an American jazz singer known as "Sassy" and "The Divine One". Her beautiful operatic voice led critic Scott Yanow to write that she had "one of the most wondrous voices of the 20th century". In 1962 she recorded a cover of Rodgers and Hammerstein's "My Favorite Things" from the 1959 musical "The Sound of Music".
