PPDS

Robert Treat Paine (1731-1814). Partially Printed Document Signed, "Paine atty," 1p, on watermarked laid paper measuring 3.75" x 6.25", Bristol County, Massachusetts, August 3, 1768. Countersigned by Elisha Tobey and Timothy Fales. Deckling to left and bottom edges. Very minor age toning. A bit of ink splatter to an otherwise blank verso. Overall, in fine condition.

A Bill in which Paine requests allowance for the sum of £2.13.2 from the Bristol County Court of Common Pleas for his appearance in the case of Benjamin Edes vs. Nathaniel Wheeler, his attendance lasting thirteen days.

Our plaintiff was likely early American printer, publisher, and newspaper journalist Benjamin Edes (1732-1803). Born in Charlestown, Province of Massachusetts, he was a revolutionary advocate before and during the American Revolution. Edes is best known as the publisher of the Boston Gazette, a colonial newspaper which sparked and financed the Boston Tea Party and was influential during the Revolutionary War.

Robert Treat Paine was a lawyer, politician and Founding Father of the United States who signed the Continental Association and Declaration of Independence as a representative of the colonial era Province of Massachusetts Bay, one of the original Thirteen Colonies. He served as the state's first attorney general and as an associate justice of the Massachusetts Supreme Judicial Court, the state's highest court.
