Description:

Robert Rauschenberg Signed "Robert Rauschenberg in Israel" Exhibit Catalog Page

A page excised from an exhibit catalog boldly signed by American Neo-Dadaist artist Robert Rauschenberg ( 1925-2008) as "Bob Rauschenberg" in purple felt-tip pen. N.d., n.p., but probably Jerusalem, Israel, Spring 1974. The obverse signed by Rauschenberg is the blank loose front endpaper, with the reverse being the title page of the exhibit catalog, "Robert Rauschenberg in Israel, with Robert Petersen, Hisachika Takahashi, Christine Kozlov, and Mayo Thompson," published in conjunction with the exhibit of the same name at Jerusalem's Israel Museum between May 14 - June 3, 1974. A commemorative stamp block of four Israeli postage stamps depicting a landscape by Israeli female painter Siona Tagger has been affixed underneath Rauschenberg's signature recto. Neatly trimmed at top and bottom. Light toning, else near fine. 8.375" x 11." Provenance: Ex-Noel Goldblatt (ca. 1926-2003) of the famous Goldblatt's Department Store, to a prominent Los Angeles, California collector.

The original first edition catalog of this museum exhibit was a softcover booklet running about 80 pages in length, with numerous black and white illustrations. Exhibit curator Yona Fischer (who had served as a curator of modern art at the Israel Museum since its founding in 1965) described Rauschenberg's visit to Israel in a series of diary entries. Rauschenberg's visit, which including viewing the famous Dead Sea Scrolls, influenced his later work.
