Robert Peel was halfway through his first term as Home Secretary in 1824. Despite his busy schedule, Peel personally wrote this thank you note to an unknown correspondent who had sent him some reading material.

"Whitehall

March 18th. 1824

Sir,

I am very much obliged to you for the communication with which you have favored me, + I will not fail to read it with attention when I have a little more leisure from public business.

I am, Sir,

Your obedient Servant

Robert Peel."

As Home Secretary, Robert Peel reformed British criminal and penal codes, and also established London's Metropolitan Police Force in 1829. Throughout the remainder of his influential 40-year political career, Peel would serve as Chancellor of the Exchequer, Leader of the Opposition, and 2x Prime Minister. Peel assumed the premiership from Victoria's beloved Viscount Melbourne in 1841 and served until 1846.
