Description:

Kennedy Robert

Black trimmed mourning card, 5.25" x 3.75". Undated but circa 1963. Signed by Robert Kennedy in black felt tip as "Bob Kennedy" with his autographed comment of "my appreciation for your kind letter". Addressed to "Dear Deke", a trusted adviser to FBI Director J. Edgar Hoover who oversaw the investigation into the assassination of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and served as the Bureau’s liaison to President Lyndon B. Johnson after John F. Kennedy’s assassination in 1963. Fine condition.

A lovely and thought-provoking mourning card. The partially printed card was created for Robert and Ethel Kennedy after the death of President John Kennedy, and states:

"We are deeply touched by your thoughtfulness in letting us know that you share in our sorrow.

We are consoled by the knowledge that the love he gave is returned in full measure.

Robert and Ethel Kennedy".

It is evident this card was less official and far more personal than the White House mourning cards issued after President Kennedy's death. This emotional card was to be for the personal distribution from John's brother Robert. This lovely card was addressed to "Deke" the deputy associate director of the FBI, the third highest ranking position behind only J. Edgar Hoover and Clyde Tolson Cartha ("Deke") DeLoach was the last of the FBI’s senior leaders from the turbulent civil rights era.He was a principal supervisor in the investigation of the murdered civil rights workers and the Mississippi Burning case. Although he oversaw the investigation into Dr. Martin Luther King, it remains unclear how involved Deke may have been with the investigation into the death of JFK as at the time he was Bureau's liaison to newly sworn in President Lyndon Johnson.
