Description:

Kennedy Robert

Robert Kennedy thank you card written entirely in his own hand on mourning card stock with the letterhead of "The Attorney General, Washington" Department of Justice, 5" x 3.75". Signed by Robert Kennedy as "Bob". Although undated, the letter is circa August 1964. Accompanied by a PSA/DNA Certificate of Authenticity.

Robert Kennedy’s touching handwritten thank you letter to Irv “Kup” Kupcinet. Boldly written in black felt tip on both sides of his Attorney General black-bordered stationery. His letter was written less than a year after the death of his brother John, which coincided with the devastating loss of Kup's daughter who was murdered coincidentally 5 days after the assassination of JFK. Perhaps 'loss' was the bond these two shared, which shows in the very personal, warm, and compassionate thank you note.

The year after President Kennedy's death, The Kennedy family wished to preserve Jack's legacy. To do so properly, they began the process of raising money to create the JFK Presidential Library. Bobby reached out to friends and acquaintances, including those in the media. One of those early calls went out to Irv Kupcinet, the legendary columnist for the Chicago Sun Times. Bobby met with "Kup" during a visit to Chicago. Still serving as Attorney General, Bobby and Irv sat down together and talked about the Presidential Library and other matters. Irv would later write about the plans and efforts to raise money for the Library in his columns. But while hosting Bobby in Chicago, their discussion likely turned to the losses that each had experienced within days of each other.

In the note offered here, Bobby thanks Kup for his efforts on behalf of the Library referencing "Mrs. Kennedy" (Jackie) and "The President" (his brother). In a very intimate manner, RFK closes his note by saying that he passed along Irv and his wife's message to his "mother". No parent should ever have to endure the loss of a child. In the case of Irv & Essie Kupcinet and Joe & Rose Kennedy, they shared that horrible experience.

The letter is shown in full below:

"Dear Kup

My thanks for your letter and especially for your many kindnesses to me when I was in Chicago

Mrs. Kennedy and all of us are most grateful for all you have done to help the library and the many kind things you have written about President Kennedy

I delivered the message from you and your wife to my mother

My thanks

Bob"
