Fulton Robert 1765 - 1815 Robert Fulton, inventor of the world's first successful commercial steamboat, demonstrates his gifted mind through an incredibly rare signed portrait sketch

A 7" x 8" sketch, captioned "Wm. McIvers", a heavy-set fellow in a double-breasted coat. Signed, "R F" on the bottom right edge of the leaf and dated "1813" underneath the signature.

Born in Pennsylvania, Robert Fulton was regarded as the mastermind who created the world's first successful commercial steamboat named Clermont. As an engineer and inventor, Fulton was constantly sketching, planning, and blueprinting new ideas with pen and paper. He had even famously sketched the first practical submarine called "Nautilus" as he was commissioned by Napoleon Bonaparte to do so. Aside from being known for modernizing steamship technology, Fulton had other hobbies, art being one of those hobbies.

This sketch comes from a very rare archive of Fulton sketches, similar ones have sold at auction for over $4300.
