Robert Frost With Wag The Dog, Yousuf Karsh Signed Portrait, Ex. Karsh Estate
SP

An original photographic print by Armenian-Canadian photographer Yousuf Karsh (1908-2002) depicting American poet Robert Frost (1874-1963), and retained by Karsh in his personal collection. The photograph is signed by Karsh outside of the image on the mat at lower left as "Karsh." N.d., n.p., unknown printing or photo type. Bearing an official estate label of provenance on verso, easily removable if desired, and accompanied by an Estrellita Karsh Estate Certificate of Authenticity. The black and white matte photograph shows Frost lounging in an armchair, his tie askew, gesticulating with one hand while petting his dog, Wag, with the other. The original photograph was one of several shots which Karsh took of Frost on April 4, 1958, as listed on Karsh.org (Sitting #11628). Gentle curling to the photo paper, else clean, crisp, and bright. The photo measures 10.875" x 13.875." Ex. Karsh Estate. This Karsh-signed photograph of Frost is more desirable than all others, because it was kept in the personal collection of Karsh and later by his wife.

A prolific portrait photographer, Karsh took an estimated 250,000 negatives of subjects over the course of 15,000 sittings over seven decades. Retrospective exhibitions of Karsh photography have pinpointed the 1940s and 1950s as Karsh's heyday - when he photographed politicians, actors, artists, composers, and writers, like Frost.

Karsh Estate Provenance: Held by the Estate of Yousuf & Estrellita Karsh; after Yousuf's death in 2002 passing to Estrellita Karsh; after Estrellita's death in March 2025 passing to Katherine Getchell, Co-Executor, Estrellita Karsh Estate and Personal Representative of Estrellita Karsh.
