Amherst College Professor of English Robert Frost probably sent an autographed copy of one of his books to recipient Sharpless Dodson Green, a school administrator from Trenton, New Jersey, sometime in the early 1920s. Green frequently contacted notables of his day for autographs, and in some cases, even solicited their life advice for his high school-aged students.

Robert Frost (1874-1963) was nominated thirty-one times for the Pulitzer Prize and won it four times. This early 1920s postal cover dates from the era of Frost’s first award. His poetry collection "New Hampshire", which included the poem “Stopping by Woods on a Snowy Evening” and at least forty-five other poems, won the prize in 1923. Frost taught English non-consecutively at Amherst College starting from 1917, the longest stint between 1925-1938.
