Robert Frost's Collected Poems, Signed and with "Stopping By Woods" Manuscript Dedication!

 

Early reprint of the Collected Poems of Robert Frost, with the poet's signature and the 4-line last stanza from "Stopping by the Woods on a Snowy Evening" inscribed in Frost's hand on the front endpaper. Dedicated to an unknown recipient, Pamela Pettee, in April 1942 in Vermont. Light expected toning to pages, else near fine. The front and back endpapers are more heavily toned, as well as a small area found in between pages 210-211, else with nice, clean pages. Expected corner grime to covers. Octavo. 6.25" x 8.75" x 1.25".

 

Frost's inscription reads in full:

 

"The woods are lovely dark and deep

But I have promises to keep -  

And miles to go before I sleep

And miles to go before I sleep.

The Collected Poems of Robert Frost, 1939 (New York: Henry Holt and Company, printed September 1941.) The hardcover volume has cream cloth-covered boards with ebonized and gilt spine decoration. A woodblock illustration after J.J. Lankes depicting a snowy winter cabin appears in gilt on the front cover as well as in red and white on the title page. There is a frontispiece portrait of Frost after Doris Ulmann, appearing above the poet's facsimile signature. Printed on watermarked Flemish Book paper.

 

The 436pp volume contains an introductory essay entitled "The Figure a Poem Makes," as well as dozens of poems from Frost's collections A Boy's Will (originally published 1913), North of Boston (1914), Mountain Interval (1916), New Hampshire (1923), West-Running Brook (1928), and A Further Range (1936).

 

Frost's poem "Stopping by Woods on a Snowy Evening," from which he quoted on the front endpaper, appears on page 275 of our volume.

 

Robert Frost (1874-1963) is recognized as a quintessentially American poet, known for his sparse and moving poetry often describing rural subjects. Over his lengthy career, Frost was nominated 31 times for the Pulitzer Prize and won it 4 times. His poetry collection New Hampshire, which included the poem “Stopping by Woods on a Snowy Evening” and at least forty-five other poems, won the prize in 1923. When he wasn't composing, Frost taught English at Amherst and Middlebury Colleges.
