Robert F. Kennedy's (2) Report Cards From Milton Academy, 1942 & 1944- Great Contents! Ex. Forbes
Archive
A pair of original report cards documenting Robert F. Kennedy's time at Milton Academy in Massachusetts. The first documents the fall term between September and November 1942, while the second records the winter term between November and January, 1944. These reports would have been mailed to Kennedy's parents, along with the handwritten comments of each teacher. The carbon copies, offered here, were then returned to the school. 6pp & 7pp, 3.5" x 6.5", Milton, MA. Exhibiting degrees of uneven age toning, surface creasing, and minor tearing to edges. Expected soiling at staples. Otherwise, very good.

Together with a photocopy of Kennedy's 1939-1942 school record at Portsmouth Priory School, showing average grades mainly in the 70s. An evaluation of his academic performance reads in part: "Kennedy has good intelligence and a keen, sharp mind. When he is under sufficient pressure, he is quite industrious… His own personal behavior is good, but he rather resents the notion that he is in any way responsible for others in the group…".

Provenance: Ex. Collection of Steve Forbes.

Additional comments from Kennedy's teachers at Milton include:

- Nov. 1942, English (grade C): "He writes poorly; needs to learn the elements of expression; but he has a refreshing habit of asking 'How' and 'Why'. He should have no difficulty if he makes a consistent effort."

- November [1942], Math (grade D): "Bob has been handicapped by a weakness in fundamentals. He is filling in the gaps and should improve stably."

- Nov 14 1942, Physics (grade -): "Impossible to give any grade at this time for much is yet to be made up. In work of past two weeks Bob is below the average of the class. He must work harder to keep up with the group."

- Feb 1944, English (grade B): "We shall miss Bob's active and intelligent participation in class discussions, and I shall miss his equally affective tests and compositions."

- Jan 1944, History (grade B): "Consistently good. A faithful and conscientious student."

- January [1944], Math (grade D): "Erratic. Occasional good work."

Upon the Kennedy family's return to the United States from the United Kingdom in 1940, a young Robert was shipped off to an assortment of boarding schools in New England, including Portsmouth Priory and, in September 1942, Milton Academy. It was during this time at the academy that he met and became friends with David Hackett, who later worked on RFK's 1968 presidential campaign. Hackett remembered the two of them as "misfits" who shared an unwillingness to conform to how others acted even if doing so meant not being accepted. The headmaster at Milton would later summarize that he was a "very intelligent boy, quiet and shy, but not outstanding, and he left no special mark on Milton".
