Robert E. Lee Vannerson Portrait CDV
CDV

A carte-de-visite of Lee, namely the classic Vannerson & Jones portrait taken from life in Richmond, 1864. Lee is shown standing in uniform with two-piece Confederate sword belt and sash, and with his famous Devisme presentation sword at side. No backstamp. A scuff at top right corner is well-clear of image, expected light edge wear and a touch of soiling to blank margins. Overall, very good.

Robert E. Lee was an international celebrity during and after the Civil War, and small carte-de-visite photographs of the famed general were produced both in the South and the North as souvenirs. He sat for several photographers in Richmond, most notably for Minnis & Cowell in 1862, and John W. Davies and Julian Vannerson in 1864.

Julian Vannerson (ca. 1826 - after 1875) was a Richmond, Virginia native who partnered with Charles E. Jones to establish the photographic studio of Vannerson & Jones in 1861. During the Civil War, Vannerson & Jones supplied both Northern and Southern audiences with iconic images of Confederate officers such as Robert E. Lee, as well as Thomas "Stonewall" Jackson, J.E.B. Stuart, and John S. Mosby. Vannerson bought out Jones' share in 1866. In 1869, Vannerson sold the studio to John and William Davies, who renamed it the Lee Gallery. Davies' portrait of Lee in a dress uniform was a favorite of both General and Mrs. Lee and is one of the most recognized images of him to this day.
