Lee Robert

Robert E. Lee signed carte de visite

Boude & Miley carte de visite signed by Confederate General Robert E. Lee (1807-1870) as "R.E. Lee" in lower right corner of black and white albumen print. Mounted on cream stock card with rounded corners labeled "Boude & Miley, Lexington, Va." verso. Very slight blemish to left of Lee's head and minor ink smudge to signature ("E.") in no way detract from the superb signed photo. Overall measures 2.5" x 4.125".

The aging commander was photographed wearing a dark suit and tie, and positioned at 3/4 profile facing left, at the Lexington, Virginia photographic studio of Boude & Miley sometime between 1866-1870. Michael Boude (1841-1918) was a Civil War veteran who had fought for the Confederate Army of Northern Virginia. In 1866, he partnered with local businessman John C. Boude to create the eponymous studio located at the corner of Main and Nelson Streets. Miley bought out his business partner in 1870.

Edward Virginius Valentine (1838-1930), the European-trained Virginia artist who later sculpted a standing bronze figure of Lee as well as his marble recumbent funerary monument, requested that Lee be photographed by Michael Miley in June 1870. Miley had previously photographed Lee both astride and standing beside his beloved white war horse Traveller in 1866. The Boude & Miley sittings would provide Valentine with reliable images of the General taken from multiple angles. Valentine's decision to photograph his famous subject proved fortuitous, as Lee died just months later.
