Robert E. Lee Signature and Address in His Hand, PSA/DNA Encapsulated and Certified
Signature
A fine signature of Robert E. Lee as "Lee" accomplished as part of the holograph address penned on an in intact transmittal cover addressed to his daughter, Mildred C. Lee, in Baltimore, MD. The attractive, marigold yellow cover measures 5.5 x 3 inches, n.p., n.d. but docketed in pencil in another hand "6 Feb/67". Bears a canceled 3-cent U.S. red George Washington stamp at top right. Tear at top margin from opening is close to but clear of Lee's signature. Encapsulated and authenticated by PSA/DNA, with dimensions of 7 x 4.25.

The address reads, in full "Miss Mildred Lee, Care of Col. George R. Goldsborough, No. 234 N. [illeg] St., Baltimore, Md."

Mildred C. Lee (1846-1905) was Robert E. Lee's fourth and youngest daughter and perhaps the most doted on, nicknamed "Precious Life" by her father. She occasionally visited her extended family, the Goldsboroughs, in Maryland at their estate "Ashby" on the Miles River, and at their Baltimore townhouse. George Goldsborough (1821-1899) and Eleanor Goldsborough (1822-1906) were described as "cousins" in Robert E. Lee, Jr.'s biography of his father, "Recollections and Letters of General Robert E. Lee." Robert E. Lee and Eleanor Goldsborough were related through marriage via the Custis Family; Eleanor was the great-granddaughter of Martha Washington. Mildred never married; she actively volunteered for the Confederate Army during the Civil War, then later devoted herself to caring for her parents.
