Description:

Robert E. Lee Sig Displayed With Huge 17" x 14" Albumen Photo Depicting Lee & Traveller, Largest and Finest Known!!!

A handsome display including an autograph of Confederate General Robert E. Lee (1807-1870), and a huge enhanced albumen photograph depicting Lee with his beloved warhorse Traveller (1857-1871). N.d., n.p. The signature and photograph are mounted and matted behind Plexiglas to a completed size of 19.5" x 22.5" x .75."

Lee's signature as "Very truly yours / R E Lee" appears at the center of a paper fragment hinged at the top, and positioned at the bottom of the display. Expected wear including isolated edge darkening, else near fine. The actual size of the clipped signature is 4" x 2.5."

The huge albumen photograph of Lee and Traveller is sepia-toned and mounted to a period mat above the Lee signature. The equestrian portrait showing Lee atop Traveller was originally taken in western Virginia in 1866, attributed to A.H. Plecker and Michael Miley. It is a full-length view of Lee wearing civilian clothes but carrying his sword behind him in the saddle; Traveller is presented in profile with his head facing right. Expected wear to the photograph surface including scattered scuffs. Isolated surface imperfections found in the sky and landscape, not affecting Lee or Traveller. Minor surface abrasions touching the upper right corner edge of the photograph. With pencil measurements on the photo mount, and mat burn verso. Else near fine. The actual size of the photo alone is 16.125" x 13.625 but with the photo mount it measures 17" x 14.125."

What was thought to be the largest version of this photograph, measuring 11” x 9.5,” sold at Heritage in 2019 for $10,000. That piece was about 5" x 4" smaller than ours, in worse condition, and did not include the lovely Lee signature included here.

The Plecker/Miley portrait of Lee and Traveller remains one of the most well-known of the famous general and his animal companion. Traveller was a male American Saddlebred purebred measuring 16 hands and weighing 1,100 lbs. His coat was gray with dark point colouration, and he had a luxuriant mane and tail. Lee's principal warhorse after February 1862, Traveller was an ideal mount, as Lee and other admiring contemporaries often remarked: he was fast, steady, responsive, hardy, and not easily frightened during battle. Sadly, Traveller only outlived Lee by a few months; he was euthanized after contracting tetanus at age 14. His grave at the chapel on the campus of Washington and Lee University can be visited today.
