Description:

Robert E. Lee's Iconic Portrait In Unusual Large Format, Handsomely Presented

A vintage photographic print of Confederate General Robert E. Lee (1807-1870) after the celebrated 1864 Vannerson & Jones portrait. N.d. but probably mid- to late-nineteenth century. N.p. The oval-shaped photographic print is sepia-colored, and Lee's eyes have been accentuated by the addition of two hand-drawn ink points. The photographic print is affixed to a gilt-bordered cream-colored mount, and the whole is matted and framed behind glass in a handsome oak-finished easel frame. Expected surface wear including toning, scattered scuffs and stains, and minor loss to the right edge of the photographic print. Isolated gilt fading. Not examined out of the frame. The large-format photographic print measures approximately 5.25" x 7.25." The frame measures 13.75" x 15.75" x 1.875."

In this bust portrait, Lee is shown in 3/4 profile with his face slightly turned to the right, dressed in a Confederate military uniform. The original 1864 portrait of Lee produced by Vannerson & Jones was the firm's most popular and well-known photograph.

Julian Vannerson (ca. 1826 - after 1875) was a Richmond, Virginia native who partnered with Charles E. Jones to establish the photographic studio of Vannerson & Jones in 1861. During the Civil War, Vannerson & Jones supplied both Northern and Southern audiences with iconic images of Confederate officers such as Robert E. Lee, Thomas "Stonewall" Jackson, J.E.B. Stuart, and John S. Mosby. Vannerson bought out Jones's share in 1866. In 1869, Vannerson sold the studio to John and William Davies, who renamed it the Lee Gallery.
