LEE, Robert E. (1807-1870) Letter Signed “R. E. Lee” to his Cousin Caro, Lexington, VA, 10” x 8” unfolded, April 8, 1868. The letter has folds and some minor separation, signature is a bit lighter than the rest of the writing.  Beautifully framed in a "frame within a frame," enabling viewing of both sides of the document.

Robert E Lee pens a warm and loving family letter, near the third year anniversary of his surrender.

“My dear Cousin Caro:  I am extremely obliged to you for your photograph. It recalls you vividly to my mind & carries me to those pleasant days where I so much enjoyed the sight of you. Yesterday your Cousin Mary rec’d your mothers letter, enclosing a picture of your son. It was difficult for me to realize that he was so large & that so many years had elapsed since his mother shone so brightly on the hills of Arlington.

I am much complimented by your desire to possess any photograph & I send you the best I have. They are no better I am sure than those you have seen for they all look to me alike, & the reason you do not recognize them is that you do not consider how time & care have changed the original since you saw him. But he feels for you Caro the same affection which then animated him, thinks of you very often & wishes much to see you again. You must present my kindest regards to your father, mother & five boys, to all & each of whom including Laurance, I wish every happiness this world can give.

I rec’d this min’t a long letter from Martha Williams. She is in Brooklyn N. Y. with her little nieces & nephews, says that she has all the trouble of a mother of a large family without the aid of a husband. Mr. Upshaw being so much absent, she hopes to get to see us this Summer.

Mary & Agnes are away from us this Winter in Maryland; & will hardly return before Summer. They wish to call by the White House & see their new sister whom they have never met. But I presume your Cousin M keeps you advised of all family affairs, so I will not repeat.

With much affection your attached Cousin (signed) R. E. Lee”
