Gen R.E. Lee

Dear Sir,

I send you by mail a copy of our new History, will you be kind enough to examine if I write a notice of [illegible] you will do me a favor by so doing./ Very Respectfully,/Geo Lycett/..."

George Lycett wrote to General Robert E. Lee regarding his newly published history book written for young students , "Southern School History of the United States", and was looking for his endorsement. Lycett's text book embraced a history of the country from the discovery of America, to the close of Andrew Jackson's administration. The book aimed to "give greater prominence to the history of the Southern States and to relate it more truthfully, than has been hitherto done in the Northern School Histories" The letter is accompanied by the printed advertisement of the text book, and the docketed stamped and postmarked envelope face in which Robert E. Lee endorsed the text book faintly in pencil in his own hand "Southern School/History" .

A great three piece set, showing the disparity of how history is documented (depending on the prejudices and views of the author). Endorsed by Robert E. Lee in his own hand.
