The image shows the Norge tethered on the ground, surrounded by a large crowd of spectators. On verso a caption has been written in pencil reading, "Airship 'Norge' designed by UMBERTO NOBILE in which he few Roald Amundsen over the North Pole 1926 FIRST FLIGHT OVER POLE." PSA Slabbed and Graded, measuring 9.75" x 13" overall. Toning and soiling throughout. Boldly signed.

A historic moment depicting the first aircraft which would be about to reach the North Pole, carrying Roald Amundsen and 15 other men (including the flags of three countries, (The United States, Norway and Italy). During the 1920s, many saw the potential of the airship for research, travel, and even warfare. Amundsen was one of those who saw its potential, and in 1925 he came up with the idea to fly over the North Pole with one of these machines. He contacted Nobile and told him his idea for just such a polar expedition, and the project was funded by a generous donation of $100,000 made by Lincoln Ellsworth, a famous American polar explorer. The expedition came to be known as "The Amundsen-Ellsworth-Nobile Transpolar Flight.”
