War of 1812

Richard Platt Writes to Aaron Burr about Munitions Necessary to Conduct the War of 1812

Autograph Letter Signed, "Rich'd Platt", 2p., 6.5" x 8", laid paper with integral address leaf addressed to "Aaron Burr Esq", June 2, 1813, Arsenal. Small loss on address leaf from opening of seal and marginal mounting remnants, neither affecting the letter. Fine condition.

In full: "My Dear Sir, I did receive the note you refer to by Baker and I sent him out to the United States Arsenal to get the composition you wished when the answer was, that not a particle of any thing could be had from thence without a written order from General Izard - / Next I applied to Stevens to tell me who would make me up two pounds of composition similar to that of . . . for shells - He says there are sundry things of apparatus necessary for the purpose of doing it, and he knows of nobody who will or can do it for want thereof. / The other item of your desire can only be had from Mitchell or Bridges the Map Maker or some other fanciful man in that line who has both leisure and taste to accomplish it. / I will see and converse with one or both of these persons and let you know the result this week. Returning to the first item, it will not seem strange to you that we cannot get it done when I tell you we have no preparations for making a Port Five, nor implements to fill a tube, even if the composition was in our possession. Such is the starved condition of our laboratory & arsenal at this moment; but in 2 or 3 days I shall have occasion to visit Izard to ask the loan of 3000 cartridges which it may lead to some other things, and if possible I will try to get hold of this thing amongst others. Yours Truly &c, Rich'd Platt."
