Richard Nixon TLS to VP Agnew Ahead of 1972 Election: "…your lecture on courtesy and democracy really warmed my heart"
TLS

1p typed letter on White House stationary signed "RN" at conclusion, addressed to Vice President Spiro Agnew. Measuring 6.75" x 9", Washington, D.C., October 27, 1972. Sent in the days leading up to the 1972 presidential election, Nixon praises Agnew on a recent triumph during a campaign lecture. Together with its original transmittal envelope docketed by Agnew on verso reading: "This letter is from my special personal files of letters to keep. STA." Near fine, with flattened letter fold at middle and isolated creasing to upper left corner.

In full:

"We have seen some interesting headlines during this campaign, but I must admit that the news report of your lecture on courtesy and democracy really warmed my heart. Everyone who has ever faced a similar situation knows he must make a decision whether or not to respond. You responded with characteristic insight-- and we are all better for it. I am sure you impressed your audience!"

Written 11 days before the 1972 presidential election, Nixon is likely referring to Agnew's response to hecklers at a Syracuse rally a few days earlier. When interrupted by some protesters, he digressed from his prepared speech and admonished the hecklers, stating 'I don't think those people over there deserve to be part of the American system. There is such a thing as civility and courtesy and restraint and an ability to open your ears to another point of view? I submit to you, ladies and gentleman, that it's very difficult for you to hear or learn anything when your mouth is constantly open.'

Through 1971, it was uncertain if Agnew would be retained on the ticket as Nixon sought a second term. The President and his associates were offput by Agnew's independence and outspokenness, at one point considering to replace him with Treasury Secretary John Connally. Even after Nixon announced his re-election bid at the start of 1972, it was unclear if Agnew would be his running mate, and it was not until July 21st that his nomination was confirmed. Just a year into his second term in 1973, Agnew was notoriously investigated on suspicion of bribery and tax fraud, for which he pleaded no contest and prompted his eventual resignation from office.
