Richard Nixon TLS thanking Jack Dreyfus for "tempting fruitcake" less than a week after announcing plans for reelection.

1pp TLS initialed "RN" with terminal of "N" looping around initials, in black felt tip marker. Initials appear at center of embossed and watermarked cream stationery paper on "The White House, Washington" letterhead dated January 11, 1972. In near fine condition with expected central paper fold, minor ghost impression of paperclip in upper left corner, and a few wrinkles. Letter measures 6.75" x 8.875". Also accompanied by "The White House" companion envelope addressed to "Mr. Jack Dreyfus, Two Broadway, New York, New York, 10004", postmarked from Washington, DC on the same date, and bearing a canceled 8 cent stamp. In near fine condition with a few handling smudges at back.

"Dear Jack: Pat and I want to thank you for the tempting fruitcake which you so kindly sent to us at Christmastime. We appreciated your thoughtfulness in remembering us with such a special holiday treat and join in wishing you good health and happiness in 1972", President Nixon wrote his friend New York financial wizard Jack Dreyfus.

37th U.S. President Richard Nixon (1913-1994) announced his intention to run for a second presidential term less than a week before writing this letter. Six months after Nixon sent his New Year best wishes, five men broke in to Democratic Party headquarters at the Watergate Hotel. During the ensuing scandal, President Nixon evaded allegations of corruption but was impeached and later resigned in 1974. The recipient of Nixon's note, friend Jack Dreyfus (1913-2009), was an Alabama-born financier who had introduced mutual fund investing to the American public in the early 1970s. Dreyfus had provided the then President-elect Richard Nixon with large amounts of the mood-altering prescription drug Dilantin in 1968. Nixon used the drug to reduce stress after Dreyfus's enthusiastic recommendation.
