Description:

Rex Harrison Gifts 1st Ed. of "The Confessions of William-Henry Ireland" to Playwright Max Anderson

A first edition copy of "The Confessions of William-Henry Ireland: Containing the Particulars of HIs Fabrication of the Shakespearean Manuscripts; Together with Anecdotes and Opinions of Many Distinguished Persons in the Literary, Political, and Theoretical World" by William-Henry Ireland, gifted to Maxwell and Gertrude "Mab" Anderson by actor Rex Harrison. London: Ellerton and Byworth, 1805. First edition. Octavo, [10], 317pp plus an Index. With an autograph note in an unknown hand immediately following the title page. This autograph note is highly and amusingly critical of Ireland and his seeming lack of contrition. With facsimile signatures and an illustrated frontispiece. Red-speckled edges. Half calf binding over marbled boards, with gilt titling at the spine. Minor shelf wear, with rubbing and bumping to the spine and corners. Faint toning to the internal pages and scattered foxing to end pages.

The book is accompanied by an autograph note signed and an addressed envelope in Rex Harrison's hand. Reading in full: "My dear Max & Mab, This is to wish you all Christmas cheer and to thank you from the bottom of my heart for giving me the chance to play in your beautiful play — I got such great pleasure from speaking your lines. When in years to come we do another which God willing we will, what about "Don Quixote"? My love to you both — Rex."

This lovely, scarce volume contains a thorough and truthful account of William Henry Ireland's career of forgery and fraud relating to Shakespearean works and documents. It includes a detailed look into the Shakespearean manuscripts and includes anecdotes and opinions of relevant people in the literary, political, and theatrical work.

Actor Rex Harrison gifted the book to playwright Max Anderson and his wife, on the occasion of Harrison's appearance in the December 1948 Broadway premiere of "Anne of the Thousand Days" - the story of Henry VIII's marriage to Anne Boleyn. The story was later turned into a film in 1969, starring Richard Burton and Geneviève Bujold.
