In full: "Camp at Cambridge June Second 1775 Capt Luke Drury has leave by a Furlough for five days to be absent from the Camp and the Guards are to let him pass & Repass." Captain Drury would have been back in time for the fighting at Bunker Hill.

Jonathan Ward (1727-1791) of Southborough, Massachusetts, became lieutenant colonel of Major General Artemas Ward's Massachusetts Regiment in June 1775 after a dispute over the position with William Henshaw was resolved by the provincial congress. When Washington decided in September that generals could not have regiments, Jonathan Ward assumed the colonelcy of General Ward's regiment and served as a regimental commander until the end of 1776, at which time he left the army. Ward's Regiment served through the Siege of Boston and the Battle of Brooklyn. The regiment crossed the Delaware with Washington and fought in the Battle of Trenton. When the Main Army began camping at Morristown, Ward's men joined it. Ward, who always struggled to keep his contingent fully staffed with soldiers, had his regiment disbanded at the beginning of 1777 when all their enlistments expired. He resigned with them at this time, having served for two years and being ready to return to private life.

Luke Drury (1734-1811) of Grafton, Massachusetts, joined the militia in 1757 during the French and Indian Wars. During the Revolutionary War, he responded to the Lexington Alarm, and later joined Colonel Jonathan Ward's regiment to fight at Bunker Hill. Drury and his men served in different areas during the war, from as far away as West Point, New York, to closer to home in Grafton, where his company guarded military stores. After the war, Drury became deeply involved in Shays' Rebellion, a 1786-1787 tax revolt led by farmers in western Massachusetts. Drury was imprisoned, but was eventually released on good behavior. He remained active in state and local politics, serving terms as constable, deputy sheriff, tax collector, assessor, selectman, and state legislator.
