Certification that an officer "had the misfortune to be taken a Prisoner by the British Troops on Long Island 27 August 1776"

[REVOLUTIONARY WAR] Autograph Document Signed "John Peirce Jun. Ass. PMG," 1p , 8" x 6.25". No place, c. 1779-1783. On watermarked laid paper. Holes at folds, else in verso good condition.

In full, "Camp Warren Sept 2d 1778. This may certify that Mr John Blunt the Bearer was a first Lieutenant in Colo. Daniel Hitchcocks regiment in 1776 - and in every respect behaved like a good and brave Officer - but had the misfortune to be taken a Prisoner by the British Troops on Long Island 27 August 1776 - Israel Angell - Colo- To whom it may Concern The above is a true Copy. John Peirce Jun. Ass. PMG."

On June 7, 1779, John Peirce was appointed "Deputy Pay Master General to the Army under the immediate command of General Washington."

By July 4, 1783, Peirce had become Pay Master General. On that date, it was resolved by the Continental Congress "That the Paymaster General be, and is hereby fully authorised and empowered to settle and finally adjust all accounts whatsoever, between the United States and the officers and soldiers of the American army, so as to include all and every demand which they or either of them may have by virtue of the several resolutions and acts of Congress relating thereto. And that the said paymaster do give certificates of the sums which may appear due on such settlements in the form and manner which the Superintendent of the finances of the United States may direct: provided always, that the certificates to the officers shall be delayed for a reasonable time, to obtain returns of payments or advances to them by the states, or public departments, where, in the opinion of the Paymaster General, such delay shall be necessary." These certificates were signed by Peirce.
