"To Henry Gardner Esqr. Treasurer for the Common Wealth of Massachusetts / Sir, please to pay to Mr. Calvin Smith such sum, or sums of money, or otherwise Notes, as shall appear to Be owe to me for my service in the 6th Regt. for the Years 1777, 1778 & 1779 and this order shall Be your sufficient Discharge from me for the same."

Continental Village was a Revolutionary War camp for Continental soldiers located on the Hudson River in New York, with arsenals for weapons, facilities for keeping cattle for food, and a supply center. In October 1777, the British destroyed the settlement after capturing Forts Clinton and Montgomery.

Henry Gardner Sr. (1731-1782) was an American politician who served as Treasurer of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts and the Colony of Massachusetts Bay. He was appointed receiver general and treasurer in 1774 by the Provisional Congress of Massachusetts. Gardner's grandson, Henry Joseph Gardner, was the 23rd Governor of Massachusetts, serving from 1855 to 1858.

Calvin Smith (1731-1802) was a staff officer in the 1st Massachusetts Regiment when it was mustered after the Battle of Lexington. He participated in the Siege of Boston and the Battle of Bunker/Breed's Hill. He was awarded the rank of Lieutenant Colonel and assigned as the Executive Officer of the 6th Massachusetts Regiment in 1776 under Colonel Thomas Nixon. When Nixon retired in 1781, Smith took command of the 6th Massachusetts until 1783.

Hatevil Colson (1714-1808) enlisted in Colonel Nixon's 6th Massachusetts Regiment in 1777, and was granted pension for three years of service from 1780 to 1783.
