Description:

Rev. War Col. S. Jack Certifies Service for Georgia Soldier

Partially Printed Document Signed, “Saml. Jack Col”, 1p, 6.75” x 8.5”, Augusta, April 26, 1784. Uneven left edge, folds with minor paper loss, light discoloration, else very good plus condition.

Colonel Samuel Jack (1733-1814) certifies for the State of Georgia, in part and with original spelling unchanged, “Barkeley Martin was Comishoned to serve as a Lieutenant in the Battalion of Minute-Men, raised for the Defence of this State…and that Bearkly Martin was not, at the Time of his being Comishoned an Inhabitant of this State, nor had he resided in any Part thereof for twelve Months preceeding his Comishon and further, That he was in Service at the Time the said Battalion was reduced…”

On verso Barkley Martin signs his application for a land grant, which reads, in full, “The petition of Bartlet Martin therewith that petitioner is desirous of taking the lands arising from the within certificate in the County of franklin & will ever pray.”

A search of historical records finds Barkley Martin in the “Roster of SC Patriots in the American Revolution, Volume II, K-Z”: Martin, Barkley, Ninety-Six District Regiment 1777-1781, Lieutenant under Captain Drury Pace during 1776. Captain in 1777. Later, a Lieutenant and Captain under Colonel LeRoy Hammond 1780-1781 (Lower Ninety-Six District Regiment).

Bounty land grants were awarded to soldiers for the risks and hardships they endured in the service of their country during the Revolutionary War. Georgia was one of only nine states which had enough vacant land to offer bounty land grants. Each state that issued bounty land had a different formula for the awards, just as each state recognized a variety of soldier.
