PAINE WINGATE, Autograph Document Signed in Text, Account and Memorandum Book, 1764-1784, Hampton Falls, NH; Stratham, NH. 56 pp., 3.75" x 6". String-bound; some bent corners; very good

Rev. Paine Wingate kept this account and memorandum book to record debts and accounts, amounts received, and a variety of other items during the 1760s and 1770s. The first few pages record his annual payments from the selectmen for serving as pastor at Hampton Falls, New Hampshire. Later pages detail his hiring of both farm laborers and household servants, generally reserving one page for accounts with each person. The notations are not strictly chronological, as Wingate seems to have kept different categories of entries in different parts of the book until all pages were filled.

Paine Wingate (1739-1838) was born in Massachusetts and graduated from Harvard College in 1759. He was ordained a minister in the Congregational Church in 1763 and became a pastor in Hampton Falls, New Hampshire, in December 1763. In 1765, he married Eunice Pickering (1742-1843), the sister of future member of George Washington's cabinet Timothy Pickering, and they had at least three children. Wingate resigned his pastorate in December 1771, but it was not effective until March 1776. At that time, he moved to Stratham, New Hampshire, where he took up farming and lived for the rest of his life. He served several terms in the New Hampshire House of Representatives and was a delegate to the state constitutional convention in 1781. In 1788, he represented New Hampshire in the Confederation Congress. He was a strong advocate of the U.S. Constitution, and the legislature appointed him to the first U.S. Senate, where he served from 1789 to 1793. He then won election to the U.S. House of Representatives, where he served from 1793 to 1795. He served as associate justice of the New Hampshire Supreme Court from 1798 to 1808. He lived to be the last surviving member of the first United States Congress and one of the last two surviving members of the Confederation Congress.
