Resolutions of the Texas Brigade
Broadside
Confederate Imprint, "Resolutions of the Texas Brigade", 4pp bifolium, 6.125" x 9.75", Camp Texas Brigade, January 24, 1865. Signed in print by B. S. Fitzgerald as chairman and Haywood Brahan as secretary. A few scattered pencil notations in an unknown hand. Central fold with near complete separation. Moderate toning and staining. Some edge chipping with small losses, not affecting clear, dark text. Overall, in very good condition.

Written and printed during the last desperate months of the Civil War, these resolutions show loyalty to Jefferson Davis and Robert E. Lee, favoring the continuance of the war and a fight to the death. In very small part: "At a meeting of the 1st, 4th and 5th Texas and Arkansas regiments, composing the Texas Brigade of Field's division, Longstreet's corps, army of Northern Virginia, on motion of Sergeant Major J. H. Leete...make known to our fellow-soldiers, to our country, the enemy, and to the world, our purpose and determination to maintain, at all hazards, and to the last extremity, the rights and liberties which a merciful God has been pleased to bestow upon us, and even to contend for a perpetual separation from the hated and despised foe, who have murdered our grey-haired fathers, insulted our women and children, and turned out thousands of helpless families to starve..."

"Resolved, 2d. That whilst we die battling in a cause, the most sacred, for liberty and independence, against a people so base, treacherous and despised...we cannot be indifferent lookers-on at those in our own country, who would divide and distract..."

"Resolved, 5th. That in President Davis, the wise, patriotic, good Chief Magistrate of the Confederate States, we repose the most perfect confidence and respect, tendering him our warmest sympathies and co-operation in the onerous duties and responsibilities resting upon him."

"Resolved, 6th. That for Gen. Robert E. Lee, the great soldier, father and friend of his army, we have the love and veneration that dutiful children owe their father - that we will always follow where he may direct, and assure him at all times of our hearty support and co-operation."

The Texas Brigade was organized on October 22, 1861 as an infantry formation of the Confederate Army that distinguished itself in the Civil War, fighting in every major battle of the Eastern Theater except Chancellorsville. Along with the Stonewall Brigade, the Texas Brigade were considered the Army of Northern Virginia's shock troops, specially created to lead military attacks. These troops are often better trained and equipped than other military units and are expected to take heavier casualties, even in successful operations.
