Bertrand Barère (1755-1841) was one of the most notorious members of the National Convention during the French Revolution. He served as President of the National Convention for two weeks, November 29-December 13, 1792. Barère voted for the death sentence in the trial of King Louis XVI. Elected a member of the Committee of Public Safety (April 7, 1793 to September 1, 1794), he emerged as one of the committee's most influential members. He occupied himself mostly with foreign and military affairs, preparing more than 150 reports on behalf of the committee. Barère was involved in the most notorious acts of the Reign of Terror (September 1793 to July 1794).
