Renoir Pierre 1841 - 1919 Renoir signed image of a seascape painting, certified by the Mayor of Cagnes-Sur-Mer where Renoir lived for the last 12 years of his life - from the archive of Renoir's art dealer and friend, Ambroise Vollard
Photographic Image Signed "Renoir" on the photographic surface, black & white, 6.75" x 5.75", overall size, 7.25" x 10". Mounted on 9" x 11.5" art board. Fine condition.
The photograph was originally part of the archive of art collector and dealer, Ambrose Vollard (1868-1939). The number "983" is in pencil at the upper edge of the mount, probably to identify the location of his original painting. In order to avoid any future disputes regarding the authenticity of works by artists Vollard represented, he had all the original paintings photographed, then asked the artist to sign each photo, and had the signature witnessed. The purple stamping beneath Renoir'`s signature is in French with the artist's name and date witnessed in manuscript: "Seen in order to authenticate / the signature of / Pierre Auguste Renoir, artist painter / above affixed / Cagnes the 10 January 1911." Signed by the Mayor of Cagnes-Sur-Mer to the right of his official circular stamping in French: "Cagnes / Alpes Maritimes" with "Mayor" inside of a laurel.
