On August 16, 1984, President Reagan issued proclamation #5227 announcing Women's Equality Day on August 26, 1984. The special day reaffirmed the Reagan administration's commitment to fostering women's equality. On August 26th, the Reagans hosted a barbecue and reception on the South Lawn to recognize the contributions of female appointees in the Reagan administration. In his brief address at the event, President Reagan noted with satisfaction that increasing numbers of American women thrived in the workforce, owned their own businesses, and were college-educated. Reagan mentioned his 1981 appointment of U.S. Supreme Court Associate Justice Sandra Day O'Connor as one of the capstone events of his administration because it proved that no role in American society was barred to women.

A photograph of the event's hosts and principal speakers--President Reagan, First Lady Reagan, Maureen Reagan, and Vice President George H.W. Bush--can be seen in the collection of the Ronald Reagan Presidential Library & Museum, accession number C 23891-14A.
