Washington, DC, January 20, 1981
Reagan Assassination Attempt Cover Signed by James S. Brady & 7 Doctors, Possibly Unique!
Signed First Day Cover

A commemorative first day cover signed by White House press secretary James Brady (1940-2014) and seven doctors responsible for giving the President lifesaving care after his assassination attempt. 1p, measuring 6.5" x 3.5", Washington, D.C., January 20, 1981. Featuring an inaugural illustration of Reagan and Bush at left, with an additional postmark dated the very same day he and Brady were shot. This example was likely signed by Brady before March 30th, as he would be left permanently disabled and his signature forever altered through rehabilitation. Exhibits scattered handling marks and light edge wear throughout. Second postmark and stamp slightly covers Brady's last name, but remains mostly visible. Dealer's notes in pencil on verso. Else, very good.

Signatures include, from top to bottom [L-R]: George A. Morales, Presidential Anesthesiologist; Joseph Giordano, Reagan's vascular surgeon; Benjamin Aaron, chief cardiovascular surgeon at George Washington University Hospital; Kathleen Cheney, assistant surgeon on Reagan's chest wound; Sol Edelstein, chief ER physician; Arthur Kobrine, neurosurgeon who operated on Brady; James Brady, White House press secretary; Dennis O'Leary, spokesman for GWU Hospital.

On March 30, 1981, President Ronald Reagan was shot and wounded by John Hinckley Jr. as he was returning to his limousine after a speaking engagement. Reagan was struck by a revolver bullet that ricocheted off the side of the presidential limousine and hit him in the left underarm, breaking a rib and puncturing a lung which caused serious internal bleeding. He underwent emergency exploratory surgery at George Washington University Hospital, and was released on April 11, 1981. White House press secretary James Brady was also shot and seriously wounded, leaving him with slurred speech and partial paralysis that required full-time use of a wheelchair for the rest of his life.
