Reagan's Handwritten Talking Points: 325 Words Penned in His Personal Code
AD
Fascinating autograph document (unsigned), five pages (over 325 words), 4" x 6", [n.p., n.d.], notes for a speech economy. Penned on the four separate yellow notecards and in fine condition.

Reagan writes in black ink and in all capital letters, as was his custom. The cards open with: "BN LOOKING OUR YR STMNT…FEDLSM RFORM & CN ONLY SAY AMEN YR DESCIPTN WHT AIL NAT...SYST BCM OVRLOD & NOTE WD SPRD CONNCTN FED PROGS…I FIRMLY CONVNCD IF CUT FED SPNDNG & LOWR FED. Reagan's facility with speaking from code began in the 1930s when he was a sportscaster. Rather than follow a game in person and base his commentary on that, Reagan reported the "…action from nothing but a slip of paper typed by a telegraph operator who was transcribing plays sent by Morse code…" (The Reagan Library). As President, Reagan improvised many of his most famous and important speeches, working only from cards written in his own code and which he kept at the podium to which he would refer as needed.
