Description:

Rare White House Invitation to Dine With President Buchanan

Invitation to dine with the president: "The President requests the honor of Mr. and Mrs. Sherman's company, at dinner, on Friday March 16th at 6 o'clock." Printed on thick card stock with some toning. Invitations of this style were used by the White House from 1857-1870 by the Buchanan and Lincoln administration. We were able to deduce that this invitation was issued on March 16, 1860, to the Shermans. 6.375" x 4.5"

James Buchanan (1791-1868) was the 15th President of the United States. He was born in Cove Gap, Pennsylvania, to parents of Scottish and Irish descent. He attended Dickinson College, where he distinguished himself academically, before graduating in 1809. He trained to be a lawyer and was admitted to the bar in 1812.

Buchanan was elected to the House of Representatives in 1821 and served there for 10 years. He then served in the Senate from 1834 to 1845, and was appointed Secretary of State by President Jackson in 1845. He left that post in 1849, but was appointed Minister to the Russian court by President Pierce in 1853.

Buchanan was elected President in 1856 and served a single term until 1861. As President, he was an advocate of slavery, and supported the Kansas-Nebraska Act of 1854, which allowed slavery in the territories. He also strongly opposed secession, but was unable to prevent the Civil War.

Buchanan retired to his home in Wheatland, Pennsylvania, after leaving office in 1861. He died there in 1868, at the age of 77.
