Roosevelt Theodore

Rare Teddy Roosevelt signed 1st ed. copy of "Big Game Hunting in the Rockies and on the Great Plains"

Rare first edition limited issue (99/100) hardcover copy of Theodore Roosevelt’s Big Game Hunting in the Rockies and on the Great Plains signed by the author as "Theodore Roosevelt" underneath a 3/4 length portrait of the future 26th U.S. President in Rough Rider uniform located in the frontispiece. Published by G.P. Putnam's Sons (New York) in 1899, the signed book runs 476 pages and contains 30 illustrations by leading print artists of the day like Robert Swain Gifford. Measures 8.5" x 11.25" x 2.5".

The book is artfully rebound, incorporating the original binding and adding a new spine. Some chipped pages internally and several pages at front and rear with some corner loss not affecting text. The signed portrait, which is the essence of the value here, is very nice with a bold signature. Some feathering of one letter mentioned only for accuracy. Portraits sell alone for over $3000!

The sumptuous fancy morocco leather boards are gilt tooled with stylized bear heads in the spandrels. Only the first 100 copies of the book had binding like this; the more common version of this book, printed in a run of 1000 signed copies, had a plain cover. Chapter title pages have charming figural headpieces, and full-page illustrations of the American West embellish Roosevelt's text.

This book combined Roosevelt's previously published monographs Hunting Trip of a Ranchman (1885) and The Wilderness Hunter (1893), in which Roosevelt recounted his exploits tracking and hunting elk, moose, bighorn sheep, buffalo, wolves, and "Grisly bears."

Disenchanted with politics in 1884, Roosevelt fled New York to became a North Dakota cattle rancher.  During this time, Roosevelt proudly acquired many cowboy skills that cemented his later Rough Rider image. Roosevelt led the Andrew Mellon-financed Smithsonian-Roosevelt African expedition in eastern and central Africa in 1909. Roosevelt's party caught or killed over 11,000 animals, sending many big game specimens back to American museums. These hunting trips in the American West and Africa only reaffirmed Roosevelt's commitments to naturalism and environmental conservation.
