Description:

George IV of England King

Rare Sealed Original Proclamation of Accession Council of the Privy Council January 31, 1820 Announcing to the City and County of Bristol the Death of George III and the Accession of George IV to the Throne

George III (1738-1820) died on January 29, 1820, having the longest reign in English history to that time. His Privy Council assembled and the Accession Council appointed to issue proclamations publicly and by similar documents to population centers such as Bristol. This document, addressed to the Mayor of Bristol, William Fripp, and was signed at Carlton House, the Prince Regent’s home. George IV was proclaimed in Bristol on February 3, 1820. His coronation did not take place until July 19, 1821.

Since the Act of Settlement of 1701 a new Protestant monarch succeeded automatically to the throne. This proclamation is a formality left over from the proclamation process that had begun in medieval England. The assemblage of signatories is unique in British history.

The following Privy Council Members, 19th Century illuminaries, sign this historic document:

—“Cantaur”: The Archbishop of Canterbury, Charles Manner-Sutton (1755-1828), on the Privy Council since 1809.

—“Edward”: The Archbishop of York, Edward Venables-Vernon-Harcourt (1757-1847), from 1808.

—“Westmoreland LPS”, Earl of Westmoreland, John Fane (1759-1841) Lord Privy Seal, from 1789.

—“Wellington”, The Duke of Wellington, Arthur Wellesley (1769-1852), Prime Minister, from 1807.

—“Melville”, Viscount Melville, Robert Dundas (1771-1851), First Lord of the Admiralty, from 1807.

—“Arbuthnot”, Charles Arbuthnot (1767-1850), MP, from 1804.

—“George Canning” (1770-1827), MP, President, Board of Control, PM (1827), from 1804.

—“Morpeth”, Viscount Morpeth, George Howard (1773-1848), Lord Privy Seal (1827-8; 1834), from 1806.
