Description:

George III, King of England
London, England, September 7, 1798
Rare King George III Signed Royal Military Appointment
PPDS

King George III of England (1738-1820). Partially printed, partially manuscript document signed, "George R," at upper left, 4pp, bifolium, 8.5" x 13.75", London, England, September 7, 1798. Additionally signed by William Henry Cavendish Bentinck, 3rd Duke of Portland (1738-1809) as "Portland." Inner two pages blank. Docketed at verso. Fully intact paper-covered red wax seal above two blind-embossed seals along left edge. A former collector's pencil notations at top right. Flattened folds and creases with separation and loss. Corner and edge wear. Expected age toning, soiling, and scattered foxing. Minor ink smudging and splatter. In very good condition with a large signature by the King, measuring over three inches in length!

Here, George III appoints George Whitehead to be Ensign "of the Second Company of the Inhabitants of the District of Guildhall in the City of London, associated to serve without Pay, and for the Protection thereof, and for maintaining the Peace and Security of the City of London."

George III was King of Great Britain and King of Ireland from 1760 until the union of the two countries in 1801, after which he was King of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland until his death in 1820. His life and reign, which were longer than those of any of his predecessors, were marked by a series of military conflicts involving his kingdoms including the defeat of France in the Seven Years' War early in his reign, which made Britain the dominant power in North America and India. Many of Britain's colonies were soon lost, however, in the American Revolutionary War. Further wars against revolutionary and Napoleonic France from 1793 concluded in the defeat of Napoleon at the Battle of Waterloo in 1815.
